is that all for tonight??

Last night, as I came home from the movies, my talkative doorman, in a desperate attempt to lure me into conversation, asked me in his usual mirthful tone where I was coming from. I knew that if I told him he wouldn’t let me off the hook so fast; just for background -  the man is an ex-engineer/professor from Poland who kills time by doing severely complicated math problems, and persistently challenging people with questions and problems.

Anyways, I told him about this awesome movie I had come from. It’s called “The Kids Are All Right” and it is by far the best American family comedy I’ve seen in a long while.

“But what? What is the point?” he said in his strong polish accent.

Thinking to myself how this guy is about to brain drill me I tried to keep my answers short “It was an intelligent portrait of American life – of a lesbian couple, their two kids, and the sperm donor. All in all very funny”

Oops, I hit the spot. The word ‘lesbian’ stirred something in him. He looked at me with a wrinkled face and sternly asked: “But what do you think this inspires in other people?? what does this movie do for you?”.  What he meant was ‘Don’t you think this type of movie is a very bad influence”. Really???

We got into an argument about gay people, raising kids, and education. We disagreed on almost every point and so it went that I was trying to convince an old-school polish man that being gay is not a problem. Not that a movie could change his mind, but I begged him to go see it. So maybe he can just begin to fathom that the internal issues of gays are the same as those of straights. Love is love is love.  It is simple, honest, and smart.  Go see it, prosze.

(Vie Heroique)

‘If Edith Piaf was French culture’s galvanic “Little Sparrow,” then Serge Gainsbourg was its insouciant toucan, with cigarettes and lascivious lyrics perpetually dangling from its beak…

The trajectory follows Gainsbourg from cheeky, homely Jewish kid in Nazi-occupied Paris to jazz-soaked ’60s provocateur to boorish burnout, lubricated by a greatest-hits wall of yé-yé, rock, reggae, and electronic new wave.’ – Slant Mag.

Can’t wait to see this biopic of Serge Gainsbourg…

Definitely going to look out for the Jane Birkin outfit recreations as well as the gorgeous Laetitia Casta as Brigitte Bardot. C’mon guys, give us a U.S. friendly version already..if not I might just watch it in French ;-/
