Artist of the Month: Leila El-Kayem

The history of Leila El-Kayem takes us onto an International journey; Carrying German and Lebanese blood, being an American born in New Zealand and growing up in London and Montreal spreads her background onto 4 different continents.

After graduating in Design Art in Montreal she moved to Berlin to dive into the world of art installation, product and graphic design and overall media at the side of Cornelius Mangold (Superclub/GDR souvenir project), Springer & Jacoby, Playstation, adidas and Reebok. And because those disciplines weren’t enough, she continued with illustrating, creating logos and imagery for music, culture & communication clients.

Leila was part of the “1000 10 1″ charity project held in Berlin back in December 2009, in which 10 friends created 1000 art pieces which were sold on 1 event to raise funds for a Children’s Hospice in Berlin.

The first time we heard about her was through her exhibition at BOLD Room, one of our favorite locations in Berlin-Mitte. We received an invitation containing a few seeds, a drawing of a tree and a short text shouting out “The Tree Story“.

Leila now drew trees. Not some random boring ones, but actually those carrying a message in every branch and every root. The anecdotal black & white drawings not only show a tree but more a glimpse into her thoughts and detailed views on contemporary influences and issues. Also these were linked to a social action, since with each tree sold “Trees for Cities” would plant one in a city across the globe.

Leila has now moved to New York to pursue her career as a creative and we couldn’t wish her more luck in that than by taking her into our “Artist of the Month” history. She even drew an exclusive tree for eVe (title picture)- thX & eVeLuV Leila!

BOLD Opening & “The Tree Story” Exhibition: Recap

As announced here and here, on Thursday was the grand opening of BOLD, run by Svenja Evers and Julia Winkels, together with a beautiful exhibition launch of Leila El-Kayem’s “The Tree Story”. And with grand, we mean real grand! Packed streets, yummy drinks, a bunch of friends, flowers, smiles, three beautiful hosts, music, kids, ladies and last but surely not least the super-cute and creative tree drawings. “Unfortunately” the ones we fell in love were already sold by the time we got there, but that’s of course a good thing! Congratulations to the happy buyers and big up for planting another tree by the charity organization “Trees for Cities”. SOTO-neighbour David Fischer was not as lazy as we were (we were just to caught up chatting to strangers!) and shot some great pictures which you can enjoy after the click. Big-Up again Bolderettes!

Reminder: “The Tree Story” at BOLD Berlin & BOLD Room Opening

Our boldest ladies from BOLD are finally inviting to their official opening tomorrow at their BOLD Room in Mitte, and we couldn’t be more excited about it! Not only will we be able to see their beautiful faces for a drink, but we’ll also be able to dive into the wise world of Leila El-Kayem, who will present the exhibition opening named “The Tree Story”. As the title teases, Leila draws trees. Graphically influenced, black and white, but with more depth than the basics would suggest. Until October 4th, the 50 exclusive and original artworks will be on display and sale (80€ each), planting a real tree for each tree sold by the charity organization “Trees for Cities”. We had already told you about this, but knowing how full event-calendars can get: here is the official reminder! We cant wait to see this- see you there tomorrow!

‘The Tree Story’ + Offizielle Eröffnung von BOLD

Metropole gepflanzt. Gleichzeitig feiert BOLD damit offizielle Agentureröffnung!
