eVe Presents: Interview with Silke Werzinger

We’ve interviewed our current ‘Artist Of The Month‘, to discover a little bit more about where she comes from, where she want to go and how cyclists with balls on their head can sometimes ‘make your day’. Thank you Silke!
*Who are you, where are you from and what do you do?
My name is Silke Werzinger, and I’m originally from a small town in the south of Germany. I moved to Nurnberg to study Communication Design and since 4 years am working for different national & international clients. I live in Berlin since 2009.
*How did you get to draw?
Basically, I draw since I can think. Already as a child I had a seperate table for it in my room and since I was about 10 years old, I wanted to do something later with graphics and drawing. At the time I didn’t know how that was called, but I knew that this should become my profession.
*Do you have a goal or what do you want to achieve?
The saying “The Way is the Goal” fits here quite well. I would like to work on many exciting projects, meet interesting people and never loose the joy of it.
*What is your inspiration, where do your ideas come from?
Many things can inspire me. Little things in everyday life, conversations with friends, people on the street, alive places, magazines, books, visits to the flea market, music, sometimes loud, sometimes soft, looking into the sky, letting your mind wander and see what happens.
For example I recently saw a cyclist at Oberbaumbrücke who had a ball balancing on his head while driving. These are small situations that insanely please me and through that also inspire.
*Do you have a favorite sketch in the moment?
I am working on a free project for some time now, which calls itself “Little Sweet Hearts.” It deals with the representation of bizarre characters and freaks in the style of idyllic family portraits.
*Which are your favorite tools & materials?
I try to do as much as possible by hand and mostly draw with pens. Added to this then comes many other things like paper, acrylic paint, felt and colored pencils, scotch tape, etc. Depending on what fits best with that project.
*Why Berlin?
In 2005 i spent several months in Berlin and immediately fell in love with the city. Since then I was a regular visitor, until I finally managed to pack my boxes and move here at the beginning of last year. Berlin radiates a mad amount of life, there is something happening everywhere. I treasure that.
*Your life motto is …?
I have none.

*Wer bist du, woher kommst du und was machst du?
Mein Name ist Silke Werzinger, ich komme ursprünglich aus einem kleinen Ort in Süddeutschland, bin nach Nürnberg gegangen, um dort Kommunikationsdesign zu studieren und arbeite seit nunmehr 4 Jahren als freie Illustratorin für verschiedene Kunden im In-und Ausland. Seit Anfang 2009 wohne ich in Berlin.
*Wie kamst du zum Zeichnen?
Im Prinzip zeichne ich, seit ich denken kann. Schon als Kind hatte ich dafür einen Extratisch in meinem Zimmer stehen und seit ich ungefähr 10 Jahre alt war, wollte ich später irgendwas mit Graphik und Zeichnen machen. Damals wusste ich noch nicht, wie sich das genau nennt, aber mir war klar, dass das mein Beruf werden sollte.
*Hast du ein Ziel, bzw. was möchtest du erreichen?
Der Spruch “Der Weg ist das Ziel” passt hier eigentlich ganz gut. Ich möchte an möglichst vielen spannenden Projekten arbeiten, interessanten Menschen begegnen und nie die Freude an der Sache verlieren.
*Was ist deine Inspiration, woher kommen deine Ideen?
Inspirieren können mich ganz viele Dinge. Kleinigkeiten im Alltag, Gespräche mit Freunden, Menschen auf der Straße, lebendige Orte, Magazine, Bücher, Besuche auf dem Flohmarkt, Musik, mal ganz laut, mal ganz leise, in den Himmel gucken, den Gedanken freien Lauf lassen und entdecken was passiert.
Vor kurzem bin ich z.B auf der Oberbaumbrücke einem Radfahrer begegnet, der während der Fahrt einen Ball auf dem Kopf balanciert hat. Das sind kleine Situationen, die mich wahnsinnig freuen und dadurch auch inspirieren.
*Hast du ein Liebelingsmotiv zur Zeit?
Ich arbeite seit längerem schon an einem freien Projekt, das sich “Little Sweethearts” nennt. Es beschäftigt sich mit der Darstellung skurriler Gestalten und Freaks im Stile idyllischer Familienportraits.
*Was sind dein Lieblings Werkzeuge/Materialien?
Ich versuche möglichst viel per Hand zu machen und zeichne zumeist mit Kugelschreibern. Hinzu kommen dann noch viele andere Dinge, wie Papiere, Acrylfarbe, Filz-und Buntstifte, Tesafilm, etc. Je nachdem, was für das jeweilige Projekt am stimmigsten ist.
*Warum Berlin?
Ich habe 2005 mehrere Monate in Berlin verbracht und mich direkt in die Stadt verliebt. Seitdem war ich regelmäßiger Besucher, bis ich es Anfang letzten Jahres endlich geschafft habe, die Kisten zu packen und herzuziehen. Berlin strahlt wahnsinnig viel Leben aus, überall passiert etwas. Das schätze ich sehr.
*Dein Lebensmotto ist…?
Hab ich keines.
