Der Fotograf Dale May, welcher eigentlich für seine Starportraits und kommerziellen Arbeiten bekannt ist, hat sich an ein völlig neues Projekt gewagt. Er zeigt in seiner neusten Ausstellung in der Samuel Owen Gallery in New York Bilder von Star Wars Lego Figuren, welche er in modernen heroischen Porträts ablichtet.

Die Figuren erinnern nicht nur an die bekannten Filme, sondern lassen uns fast schon etwas nostalgisch werden. Wer hat als Kind schließlich nicht mit Lego gespielt?! Die Kombination von Kunst, Kindheitserinnerungen und Produktfotogafie in dieser simplen Art und Weise, wie Dale May sie in seiner Star Wars Serie aufzeigt, fasziniert und gefällt.

Das komerzielle jedoch ganz weglassen, konnte Dale May nicht – in einiger seiner Bilder sind verschiedene Logos von bekannten Fashionlabel zu finden, die er geschickt im Zusammenhang mit den Star Wars Legofiguren darstellt.

Die Ausstellung ist noch bis zum 19. Januar 2012 zu bewundern und nicht nur ein Fall für Star Wars Fans.

Wir können es noch fast selbst nicht glauben, doch der bekannte Künstler Maurizio Cattelan hat seinen Rücktritt aus der Kunstszene angekündigt.

Während seine Karriere hatte der, zugegeben etwas verrückte,  italienische Künster einige male für Aufsehen gesorgt. Ein Beispiel wäre da die riesige und fast schon liebevoll betitelte “L.O.V.E.” Skulptur welche ein riesiger Stinkefinger aus Stein darstellt, den der Künstler vor die italiensiche Börse gestellt hatte. Er klaute auch schon die Kunstwerke eines anderen Künstlers und stellte diese dann unter dem Titel “Another Fucking Readymade” in seiner eigenen Ausstellung aus oder erschien erst gar nicht zu seiner Ausstellung, sondern organisierte eine Agentur die ihr neustes Parfum vorstellte.

Es schien schon immer so, als wollte er der Kunstszene immer wieder entkommen und weder seine Werke, noch sich in den Mittelpunkt stellen. Doch genau dies begeisterte sein Umfeld – schliesslich liebt die Kunstszene leichte Rebellen, Regelbrecher und etwas abgedrehte Personen. Die Szenenkenner bezweiflen seinen Rücktritt jedoch. Das er tatsächlich abtreten könnte, dass glaubt eigentlich niemand ausser Maurizio Cattelan selber.

Das Guggenheim in New York eröffnet an diesem Wochenende eine Retrospektive seines Gesamtwerks. Nahezu die gesamten Produktion aus den vergangenen 20 Jahren des Künstlers werden ausgestellt. Vor allem die Präsentation der Werke ist speziell: Sie hängen wie ein gigantisches Mobile von der Kuppel der Guggenheim-Rotunde.

Für Cattelan ist es der Anfang vom Ende, für seine Fans bloss eine Frage der Zeit.

Toy Tokyo und die TT-Underground Gallery aus NYC haben sich zusammen getan und werden exklusiv 2 Tage lang Kunstwerke versteigern, von unter anderem Shepard Fairey, Stash, Ron English und vielen mehr. Das ganze zugunsten der Opfer in Japan. Für diejenigen unter euch die gerade vor Ort sind, sollten sich die Opening Reception am 2. April nicht entgehen lassen. Lamour Supreme & Greg Mishka werden live malen. Exhibition A is  wonderful thing.  For all of you who know, we salute you. For those of you who don’t, well, hello. You’ve come to the right place. A place where notable contemporary artwork happens for your pockets to fit.

The inauguration  for Exhibiton A’s Monochrome Set happened at the  pulse of Manhattan, the Ace hotel, and included works from Terence Koh, Nate Lowman, Hanna Liden, Josephine Meckseper, Olympia Scarry, Peter Sutherland, Oliver Zahm and Leo Fitzpatrick. The show will run until April 8th!

Mallick Williams & CO. are presenting us with another black and white collection of converging artistry, from illustrations to photography and everything in between.

The exhibition is called Hueless and comprises of the collected works of several artists, including D Face, Shepard Fairey, Erik Haze, Curtis Kulig, Pete Watts and Skullphone. The overall monochrome tone does not turn it into a tedious collection though, but rather just adds to its depth.

If if you walk the streets around the gallery, you’re most likely to encounter some pop-up pieces signed by the same names anticipating the actual location.

San Franciscan Spoke Art have come up with a new concept of making art fans sweat. This time it’s about a showdown between world famous directors Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Brothers. The title of the exhibition is quite revealing in itself – “Quentin vs Coen – An art show tribute to the films of Tarantino and the Brothers”.

It features over 100 American artists who were asked to illustrate some of their favorite scenes, characters and situations from the directors’ movies and display them at New York’s Bold Hype Gallery for all eyes to see.

The importance of the exhibition is utterly clear – it shows that the boundaries between art scenes are slowly melting down and confer a documentation of the very picturesque world that we live in.

Ice Cream Social is the sort of art project that crosses all barriers: it goes way beyond the visual and transports its audience into a universe of live performance, novellas, TV shows and feature movie scripts. By the time the artist started working at this project, way back in 1993, US ice cream company “Baskin Robbins” had already let its parlor serve as an  artspace for paintings based on its graphics. So it was only natural that this project came about in a very relaxed and friendly environment.

Robbins finds himself at the crossroad between art, entertainment and comedy, and his concept of aesthetics is therefore relational.

Für die Ausstellung „Heaven or Las Vegas“ kreierte der in Brooklyn lebende chilenische Künstler Ivan Navarro eine Reihe von Wandskulpturen aus Fluoreszenzröhren. Die Wandskulpturen stellen zwölf Grundrisse der weltbekanntesten Wolkenkratzer, darunter das Flatiron Building in New York, den Jumeirah Emirates Towers in Dubai und The Center in Hong Kong, dar. Ausgewählt wurden die Gebäude abhängig davon, wie anspruchsvoll und innovativ das Design und die erforderliche Technik beim Bau war. Doch nicht nur das war ausschlaggebend. Auch die historische Relevanz in Bezug auf den Einfluss vom Westlichen Baustil in der ganzen Welt berücksichtigte der Künstler bei seiner Wahl. Durch das genau positionierte und durchdachtes Spiel von Spiegeln und Licht, wirkt es so, als würde man von oben in die einzelnen Gebäude hineinblicken können, welche in Wirklichkeit einige 1000 Meter hoch sind. Zusätzlich hat der Künstler in jeder seiner Arbeiten noch Wörter oder Ausdrücke wie „Verzichte“, „Sag Ja!“ oder „wiederstehe“ eingefügt, die wie ein tiefes Echo das aus den Gebäuden zurück geworfen wird wirken.

Die Ausstellung „Heaven or Las Vegas“ ist noch bis zum 2. April 2011 in der Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York zu sehen.

Coinciding with New York’s Asian Contemporary Art Week 2011 Bill Hodges Gallery is going to present NAO, the New York City debut exhibition of Tanabe, Nao. Between March 24th and April 14th they will feature acrylic portraits of delicate young females painted in magically romantic landscapes exploring ideas of neoteny.

This exhibition calls attention to the phenomenon of neoteny in Japan, in addition to the rest of the world, examining how certain individuals exhibit delayed attitudinal development into conventional adulthood. Artist Tanabe explains:

“The concept of maturity began changing in Japan during the late 80s and early 90s with the emergence of new fashion movements and subcultures that challenged conventional ideas of maturity. I feel that my works are representative of that phenomenon“.

We really think that this subject is kind of interesting!

Japanese artist On Kawara has been in group and solo exhibitions around the world. He is known for one series in particular, Today. These black-and-white paintings were started in 1966 and consist solely of a date painted on a white background. If the painting was not completed by midnight it was destroyed.

The series is now on display at the Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York until January 22nd. Stop by and see what all the hype is about.
