Artist Of The Month

Jul 2011
Artist of the Month: Safia Bahmed Schwartz

Let’s start from the beginning. It is the year 1990. Strasbourg, France. 4-year-old Safia Bahmed Schwartz roamed the great museums, immersing herself in the works of the masters. As a child, it’s natural never to imagine much further than your current fixation. Her current fixation? Vincent van Gogh.

Our eVe artist of the month, Safia, photographer; illustrator, and even book publisher, has come a long way from those overpowering museum halls.

She grew up intensely learning Arabic and routinely attending religious Islamic classes. She was unwillingly forced to wear the veil and suffered from intense discrimination and ridicule after 9/11. Having experienced up-close and personal the impacts of terrorism after the arrest of a close family friend for attempts to bomb the US embassy, she decided instead to leave her life behind and trot the globe. Not making art, but selling drugs. From France all the way to Bangkok, Dakar, New York, Tokyo, Montreal, Los Angeles and Geneva.

Artist of the Month: Sarah de Burgh

Freelance photographer, Sarah Yang de Burgh. Her name itself is a sign of her mixed, spontaneous personality. Chinese, American, Bristish. 24 or 25 years of age. Does it really matter?

Definitions are simply self-made constraints anyway. But if we were to go into detail, Sarah was born and raised in France. Paris to be exact. The land of skinny fashionistas and sweet macaroons. High culture and that touristy tower. A land of contrasts, like Sarah herself. Maybe that’s why she listens to loud rap music silently – always with her headphones on.

Artist of the Month: Daniella Midenge

Our new resident ‘Artist of the Month’ is Daniella Midenge, the Swedish-bred, Berlin-bound photographer.
Location is but a snippet of what defines Daniella as an artist. She has largely worked professionally with high-end beauty and fashion editorials, but her portraits suggest otherwise. They are instantaneously captivating – a rarity in the commercial world.
A look at her photographs allows you to understand the beauty, sensuality, fragility, strength and vulnerability of women all at once. She captures movement with a staring eye and frustration with a constrained pose.

Artist of the Month: Marie-Fleur Charlesworth

Marie-Fleur Charlesworth is our February 2011 ‘Artist of the Month’.

Reminiscent of the days of the great Polaroid camera, Marie-Fleur’s photography is a dream-like look into the modern day world of beautiful women, gorgeous clothing and hidden places. Slightly blurred, each image is as soft as the subject being photographed.

Based in London, Charlesworth draws her inspiration from film makers like Wes Anderson and David Lynch. Her photography has already seen great success with her works being featured in the likes of Pigeons & Peacocks, Stylist, and Ozon among many others. Creating “a vision of pure style” we are proud to feature the brilliant photographer this month.

Artist of the Month: Virginie Dubois

After a December brake, Virginie Dubois is our chosen artist of the month for January 2011.

It all began when Virginie Dubois purchased her very first camera back in 2008, capturing images of her dog and friends with no intention in mind. Flash forward to 2010 and the previous make-up artist turned photographer now has her work featured in top publications such as C-Heads Magazine and Dirrty Glam.

After working for several agencies, designers and shooting a campaign for an Evian and Paul Smith collaboration, it is safe to say that the talented French woman has officially reached success.  Capturing portraits and fashion spreads, Dubois tends to use nature as her backdrop, using the sun and clouds to achieve the perfect shot. She knows how to achieve them, constantly snapping up vivid, fun, colorful shots full of life. Her passion shines through in her work, making her our very much beloved artist of the month.

Artist of the Month: Elinor Carucci

Elinor Carucci is our chosen artist of the month for November 2010.

Since 1996 Elinor Carucci has been showing her photographs around the world, from France to London to New York, her intimate and profound works have been on display for all to see. Her initial photographs, taken in her teens revolved around one sole individual, her mother. Captivated by the power and influence the great woman had over her life, Carucci expressed her feelings through her photographs.

As she grew older, she began to photograph other close loved ones, including her father, brother and relatives, impulsively. Originally snapping shots to capture pure emotions, she was soon slowly drawn towards, what she thought of as “professional photography,” and began shooting posed scenes of her mother and herself. The lack of naturalness left Carucci feeling frustrated as she put her camera down, only to pick it up again at the age of 21.

This is when her style really came to life, going back to her origins she began shooting her husband, Eran, and family members in the midst of real situations. Capturing images in color, full of life and intimate moments. These images, as revealing as they are, complete with nudity, raw human relationships and surges of emotion, both good and bad, let viewers into the life of Carucci and her loved ones without going too far. Each tells a story without words, leaving viewers to make up their own versions.

Learn more about Carucci and her strong womanly views in our interview with her here, and check out some of her moving photographs after the click!

Artist of the Month: Leila El-Kayem

The history of Leila El-Kayem takes us onto an International journey; Carrying German and Lebanese blood, being an American born in New Zealand and growing up in London and Montreal spreads her background onto 4 different continents.

After graduating in Design Art in Montreal she moved to Berlin to dive into the world of art installation, product and graphic design and overall media at the side of Cornelius Mangold (Superclub/GDR souvenir project), Springer & Jacoby, Playstation, adidas and Reebok. And because those disciplines weren’t enough, she continued with illustrating, creating logos and imagery for music, culture & communication clients.

Leila was part of the “1000 10 1″ charity project held in Berlin back in December 2009, in which 10 friends created 1000 art pieces which were sold on 1 event to raise funds for a Children’s Hospice in Berlin.

The first time we heard about her was through her exhibition at BOLD Room, one of our favorite locations in Berlin-Mitte. We received an invitation containing a few seeds, a drawing of a tree and a short text shouting out “The Tree Story“.

Leila now drew trees. Not some random boring ones, but actually those carrying a message in every branch and every root. The anecdotal black & white drawings not only show a tree but more a glimpse into her thoughts and detailed views on contemporary influences and issues. Also these were linked to a social action, since with each tree sold “Trees for Cities” would plant one in a city across the globe.

Leila has now moved to New York to pursue her career as a creative and we couldn’t wish her more luck in that than by taking her into our “Artist of the Month” history. She even drew an exclusive tree for eVe (title picture)- thX & eVeLuV Leila!

Artist Of The Month: Silke Werzinger

Having a look at Silke Werzinger’s CV there is a first question we ask ourselves: how old can she be? But that’s surely not the first one, an eVe would ask an eVe. Maybe that list is simply a black & white proof of what a talented young woman can achieve when there is nothing but pure passion. Creations and successes which this eVerette, illustrator and graphic designer from southern Germany achieves to leave us fascinated. Her slick style and good taste, making the ugly beautiful, playing with colours and techniques and the story found behind every sketch make her inks unique.

Converting ‘what she loves to do’ into her profession in 2006, she quickly started working for magazines such as TUSH, INDIE, WAD, NYLON and NEON to rise as one of the most celebrated upcoming talents, winning the Red Dot Design Award in 2008 for her thesis work “Pimp My Life”.

But this time, we weren’t only interested in her beautiful outcomes- eVerettes surely are curious!

Artist Of The Month: Kate Bellm

Kate Bellm surely represents a bad-girl image. Not only with her pictures, but also with her own strong attitude and great sense of style, she is one of the most important upcoming photographers of the moment. Born in 1987 in London, she studied at a boarding school until she was 18, to then immediately move to Paris a year later taking her first steps as a photographer for different magazines. Her first job was a 6 page story about Harley Davidson gangs in South Carolina for Esquire magazine- from there on it was just a rising roller-coaster ride!

Fashion followed shortly after, being something intriguing for the beautiful eVerette, who’s shoots have been published within GQ, Super Paper, Indie, Tatler, L’officiel, I Love You magazine and The Herald Tribune, for brands like Adidas Originals and Kitsune and with exhibitions of her work in Zurich, Philadelphia, Paris and Berlin. Kate moved to Berlin a little more than two years ago to work for VICE and then as a photo editor for a new Parisian magazine called Lurve.

Travelling the world, jumping in between Berlin and London on a constant basis, she has recently been working on some series for Nylon and Style and The Family Tunes.

We are very honoured to feature Kate as our Artist of the Month of July, being not only an individual and super-positive character but of course an amazing one-of-a-kind photographer! eVeLuV to you, Kate!
