For the first time we see something for the ultra-kitsch traditional princess toy Barbie translated into something contemporary, up-to-date and close to being part of the furniture frenzy. The dolls that we used to dress when we were little, in pink fluffy 80’s dresses, now also wear basics and love sunglasses. And this of course needs the ideal surrounding.

Rising from the eastern European lands of Poland, Miniio satisfies that minimalistic hype. The project run by “mums”, started out because they have three fantastic boys. But they dreamt of doll-houses and everything they would have wanted to get their next-life little girls. They take play seriously and therefore have created a somewhat miniature IKEA world, inspired but what grown-ups would have in real-life, translated serious into small.

Miniio produces everything by hand, paying attention to materials and details. Separated within their shop, you can buy all elements separately- not a cheap fun, but therefore surely something special for you or the mini-you’s.

Weddings and getting married could have never been cheaper. And lets just assume that this could be for real, and make all those shaky relationships be bonded forever. For a dollar or a pound, you can get a quick hitch, a couple of rings and a personalized certificate, making sure you can show your daddy a piece of paper, since that’s what might count for him.

Pre-nuptuals excluded, the AutoWed Wedding Machine features specially produced music for the event, a retro keyboard & display, a ring vendor and ticket printer. Of course its pink and of course we need to get one to get married again and again and again, anytime we want to.

Question is: What about the divorce? Neeeever.

Dass sich die Designer von  G-Star immer wieder mal in anderen Bereichen, als der Mode ausleben, ist nichts Neues. Nach den bekannten Crossover‐Produktreihen von G‐Star “RAW Flask”, “RAW Defender”, “RAW Ferry” und “RAW Cannondale” wurde letzte Woche im Rahmen der Art Basel “Prouvé RAW” vorgestellt, eine Kollektion von neu interpretierten Möbelklassikern des französischen Designers und Konstrukteurs Jean Prouvé.

Gemäss G-Star war Jean Prouvé schon länger Inspirationsquelle für das Designteam von G-Star und beeindruckte immer wieder aufs Neue. Dies war auch der Grund, weshalb G-Star unbedingt mit der Familie des bereits verstorbenen Jean Prouvé und dem Schweizer Möbelhersteller Vitra zusammen arbeiten wollte. Durch die Zusammenarbeit haben die bekanntesten Entwürfe Prouvés eine neue, sehr moderne Erscheinung bekommen und gleichzeitig wurden einige der weniger bekannten Designs wiederentdeckt. Damit die Möbel mit Kultstatus ein frisches und zeitgenössisches Erscheinungsbild erhalten, hat die Familie Prouvé, Vitra und G-Star zwei ganze Jahre lang daran gearbeitet. Und es hat sich gelohnt.

Die erstellten Möbelentwürfe werden noch bis zum 31. Juli 2011 im Feuerwehrhaus von Zaha Hadid auf dem Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein ausgestellt. Die Prouvé RAW Objekte können täglich um 12 und 14 Uhr im Rahmen einer Architekturführung auf Englisch und um 11, 13 und 15 Uhr auf Deutsch besichtigt werden.

Martina Carpelan is from Finland. She is a product designer who also likes to mingle with interiors, graphics and unconventional concepts. She does cool things, just like the “Rise and Sigh” bed sheets, for which she surely has a great explanation: Rise and Sigh is a col­lec­tion of reveal­ing bed linen that plays with inci­dents often tak­ing place in hotels. Dif­fer­ent sleep­ing posi­tions give dif­fer­ent imprints on the sleep­ers’ body as the mes­sages have been embroi­dered as a raised reverse image so they will appear prop­erly when emboss­ing your skin.

Simple but excellent. You can get your linens customized with any sentence wished, from romantic to absolutely dirty or enjoy the ones she pre-designed for you.

Rafael de Cárdenas understands what it means to blow minds away when releasing his first furniture collection. Mastering in the fields of fashion, architecture and interior design, he has gracefully designed a series of sideboards, tables, sofa’s and other geometric furniture highlights which were now presented at the Johnson Trading Gallery in New York. He was also the designer of the OHWOW NYC bookstore!

Combining plywood with a delicate use of color he describes his collection as: “a homage to Bruce Goff and Frank Lloyd Wright, the furniture in this collection takes the cube as the underlying structural form. Through rotation, mirroring and multiplication, each piece is composed from an uncomfortably simple set of relationships – cubes fastened by triangular or semi-circular forms– that are both decorative and essential structural elements.”

WhyrHymer Möbel wurden von Brandon Morrison und seiner Frau gegründet. Alle Designstücke werden von Hand in der Hauseigenen Werkstatt erstellt. Weder Brandon noch seine Frau haben je gelernt, Möbel zu schreinern. Learning by doing war ihre Devise und Fehler halfen, um auf neue Ideen und Möglichkeiten zu kommen, bis ihre Stücke ihren Vorstellungen und Ansprüchen gerecht wurden. Alle Möbel werden aus Holz hergestellt, seien es Stühle, Betten, Tische, Kommoden oder Lampenständer. WhyrHymer Möbel haben einen unverkennbaren, natürlichen Stil und heben sich durch ihren starken Charakter von anderen Möbel ab. Zusätzlich kann man als Kunde auch spezielle Wünsche anbringen, wie zB eine untypische Tischlänge, welche dann bei der Produktion berücksichtig werden. Bei jedem verkauften Möbelstück gehen 3% an eine Hilfsorganisation. Anette K Hansen und Deidre Ritsche zwei Frauen die es sich Aufgabe gemacht haben Mode, Möbel, Accessoires und mehr zu “upcyclen” wie sie es nennen. Mit ihrem eigens errichteten Pop- Up Shop in Berlin XBerg, haben sie eine Event Location geschaffen, die sowohl als Boutique, wie auch als Galerie genutzt wird. Sie arbeiten ausschließlich, mit von ihen ausgewählen Künstlern zusammen und stellen so sicher, dass die Qualität und Herkunft der Materialien ihrem Standard entspricht. Dieses Wochenende laden sie ein zum Thema ” A two wheeled affair” ein! Der Frühling zeigt sich gerade in schönster Pracht und zum Start der offiziellen Fahrradsaison, passt dieses Event perfekt!

Pop-Up Showrooms, Pop-Up Stores, Pop-Up Galleries kennen wir alles und “Pop-Up” war sowieso mitunter das meist gehypte Thema in 2010 und vielleicht sogar schon in 2011. Levi’s hat sich dem Hype angenommen und einen absolut wirksamen Pop-Up Closet gestaltet.

Mit einem ca. 1,20m hohem und fast breiten Briefumschlag ist die Aufmerksamkeit definitiv schon mal gesichert! Zudem verspricht die Aufschrift natürlich schon einiges und Frau will direkt das Ding aufreißen! Die Konstruktion des Ganzen ist außer praktisch, auch noch extrem präsentations-einfach! Wir finden eine extrem gute Idee und hätten auch sehr gerne einen von diesen Pop-Up Closets!

Every once a while, we ask ourselves onto which side to settle!

This time, the showdown is settled between Glasgow artist David Shrigley and Californian babes Cidney Morris & Dallas Wand for Stone Cold Fox.

The first one takes pride in depicting humorous, inconsequential situations with a touch of bizzare. His view point is odd and at times almost left-handed and supports turning away from normality. Nevertheless, he manages to get his message across just fine: bad girls make the better company.

On the other side, Stone Cold Fox is the fortunate combination of one time Parsons buddies, who in their alliance fight for delicacy and the maintanance of true vintage values. They are apparently two of the few who still believe in purity and manage to make even the good girl look a bit more interesting.

A new sort of revolution is about to burst. Although this time, unlike the rest, its time and place are given facts and its motives well known.

Qubique is a new furniture fair scheduled for  October 26th-29th- 2011 (so there’s still time yet to clear your schedule) and will foreseeably take place in avant-gardist location, Berlin’s very own Tempelhof Airport.

The team around the event is young and motivated and wishes to inspire creative thinking that has not yet been annihilated by mass production as we know it. They believe in the power of art and the uniqueness of their product, and assure us through their Manifesto that atmosphere, light and sound can still salvage the world that is “true design”.

Because the Qubiques recognize the power of the two-way flow of successful communication, the fair will also include a discussion pannel and several intradisciplinary activities for architects, merchants, gastronomers and of course, the media.

Plastic artist Jessica Harrison likes to play with death. Or at least re-conceptualize it in an unlikely manner, capturing its beauty. Which is great, as the world is grim enough as it is and we don’t really need more dark, lonesome illustrations of the end of times.

Her ceramic collection contains, well, a bunch of dead women. To put it more accurately though, they’re proper ladies caught in the act of doing proper ladies’ things, such as taking a refreshing walk through the saloon or wavering their lace fans in front of their 19^th century gowns. The only difference is that they have their eyeballs popping out and, instead of carrying a basket filled with fresh fruit, the ladies are carrying their own brains.

The clear cuts and predominantly bright color palette of the miniature sculptures contrasts all the more with the massive blood spill, making the whole thing go way beyond the visual, into the conceptual. It’s a lucrative collection that inspires nobility despite of its flesh-hungry details, with everything from hairdos to facial expressions suggesting an almost imaginary calmness.

For the avid dark-hearted beauty amateurs, Jessica Harrison’s lady figurines are surprisingly feminine for the amount of blood they depict.
